Introductory, Group and Specialized Horsemanship Lessons
Intro or Evaluation Lesson (any age) - One-hour private
The intro lesson involves a quick tour of the farm and meeting a few of the residents. Brief history of the horse and how it has come to its present relationship with man. How horses react to certain situations. How to move safely around a horse. Talk about the different types of riding and about careers in the horse industry. We will groom and saddle a horse; then with the time left we will take a quick ride and explain briefly how to do an emergency stop, regular stop, and steer (rein) you horse.
Pony Pals (3-5 years) - 1/2 Hour or One-hour private
For our youngest equestrians it involves working with very calm, slow horses. I stress how to move and act safely around the horses and ponies. The students will help me lead a pony on the ground; and brush and saddle a pony. Riding starts very slow with the horse on a lead at all times. Great for establishing balance, equilibrium and confidence. Our main goal here is to be safe, have fun and go slow.
Group Lessons - One Hour
Group lessons arranged by level. People with riding experience are still required to complete an evaluation lesson to see at what level the student will be able to participate comfortably and safely. Group lessons are usually specialized riding classes or groups of friends and relatives. We always have a ton of fun in these lessons. It is the most realistic riding environment. Riding is a great group activity for parents and students to share together. We play games, set up obstacle courses, and simulate horse competitions.
Barrel Racing Lessons - One Hour
Having worked with and been mentored by two-time world champion barrel racer Jane Melby, Carlina can provide a professional-level look at the barrel racing industry. She herself has taken many barrel horses to the professional level, competing at state and national finals in 4-H, junior, high school and college rodeo. For the lesson we provide barrel horses that suit beginners to advanced, or you can bring your own. Carlina takes a calm approach to an active sport.
Pole Bending and Gaming Lessons - One Hour
At junior level competitions, there are many variations of timed events. Having experienced and competed in many of these events, Carlina can teach detailed techniques and training methods for horse and rider. Pole Bending and Weaving is growing in popularity and now provides many opportunities to compete for money and scholarships at all levels. Carlina has several horses that know pole bending and pole weaving patterns.
Natural Horsemanship Lessons - One Hour
Horsemanship techniques so old, they are new again. A mix of ancient Greek methods for training warhorses to techniques Native American riders taught their amazing hunting and war ponies. Includes a mixture of progressive teaching methods by Pat Parrelli (Carlina first taught his method and theory in 1996 and has followed his teachings ever since). Also researching such trainers and great horsemen as Bill and Tom Dorrace, Monty Roberts, John Lyons, Ga-Wa-Ne Pony Boy and many more. In these lessons, we do a mixture of riding and ground work.
What to bring
We require a helmet for all students under 18 and recommend one for all ages. We can provide students with a helmet but it might be a worthwhile investment if the student plans to continue with their equine education or career.
Required for lessons is a pair of riding boots or riding shoes. All foot apparel for riding needs a two to three-inch heel. The reason is to help the rider's foot from slipping through the stirrup, potentially creating a very dangerous situation.
Long pants are the best defense against saddle sores. When riding (especially English) legs need to move over the leather or suede of the stirrups. This can cause very sensitive sores quite quickly. Jeans or riding breaches are usually best.
Dress accordingly for the weather. Sunscreen and bug spray are good thing to apply before a lesson in the warmer seasons. In the wet cold months, we do a lot of riding indoors, but please be prepared to be outside and dress warmly.
Call soon and secure a lesson time! Classes fill up quickly!
