At Horsin' Around, we have a great environment for training horses. We have outdoor and indoor arenas that are lighted so we can get a lot of work done even through the short days of winter and during inclement weather. We have constructed little ponds, bridges and the desensitizing ‘hot walker of horror’ (it's an older, working hot walker with tarps, streamers, sheets, and ropes attached to the arms that horses must walk under). There are a few trails and places you can ride from the ranch that will expose your horse safely to cars, trucks, barking dogs, ATVs, and motorbikes. Exposing a horse to a broad and varied environment under controlled situations is crucial to a solid foundation.
I use a medley of modern, natural horsemanship techniques coupled with practices and theories of ancient civilizations. Humans have only lived with horses for a few thousand years. The majority of that time, we used horses as one of our main sources of food, hunting them on every continent they inhabited. When humans first crossed the line from predator to partner, it had to of been immensely difficult. I feel that knowledge gained from those first experiences training and communicating is priceless and still very effective with today’s domesticated horses.
Horsemanship and training dating back to ancient Greek methods by Xenophon (often cited as being the original "horse whisperer", having advocated sympathetic horsemanship) and original approaches from Ojibwa and Chippewa war horse training. Yet I have also explored teachings and programs by Pat Parrelli, John Lyons, Bill and Tom Dorrance. I have had the good fortune to train with world champion barrel racers and state champion ropers. I have experienced starting many young horses and finishing many professional barrel racing horses. I also spent time living and working in Ocala, Florida - nicknamed Horse Capital of the World - which allowed me to see inside the horse racing industry and learn many of the high-end tricks of the trade.
I received my Large Animal Massage Practitioner (LAMP) license after moving to Washington state; which has enhanced my understanding of which behavioral issues stem from physical ailments or hindrances. Overall, I tailor my training programs to the horse and owner. For every month of training, I highly recommend taking a few lessons to fully understand what new communication techniques you will be able to utilize with your horse.
When a horse is in training at Horsin' Around, the owners are always welcome to come watch the session. Just call to see what time your horse is scheduled. It varies from day to day.
